Upskill for Career Growth and Business Success in 2022

Upskill in 2022

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you know to experience sustainable career progression and business growth, the following top priority skills are a necessity:

  • Leadership
  • Collaboration
  • Communication

Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal skills involve a successful demonstration of one’s behavior and approach to interacting with others. The opportunity to work alone, never engaging with other people is rare because you don’t live on a deserted island. Even if you do work alone, interacting with others at some point is required.  To see long-lasting success in your career or business, it is essential to possess effective interpersonal skills.

People skills should not be underestimated because no matter the industry, people are your customers; and to effectively relate and connect with people involves skill; skill that needs continual development. Some are naturally gifted when it comes to connecting with people, while others need development to cultivate the proficiency.

Improving your relational skills is a great investment because the pay off impacts both your personal and professional life, and who doesn’t want that?

Leadership

The skill of leadership is defined as leading a group or organization. Though this definition is applicable, leadership also describes one’s capacity to influence others through inspiration, which does not solely pertain to people-leaders.

There are countless leaders without direct reports that consistently influence others toward accomplishing a common goal. The word leader is not exclusive to a title or position.  Nevertheless, the skill of leadership when developed, can catapult one into a trajectory of rapid career progression.  But don’t get it twisted, even though leadership  skills have many benefits and employers are desperate for skillful leaders, not many people spend time developing their leadership abilities.

A 2021 Linked-In Workplace Report showed leadership is a top priority that learning and development programs are focusing on. Leadership skills include relationship building, conflict management, emotional intelligence, resilience, and more. Whether you are employed or an entrepreneur, these competencies are essential to success.

If career advancement or business growth is on your goal list for 2022 and beyond, then leadership training and development should be on the list as well.

Collaboration

The skill of collaboration relates to two or more people or organizations collectively working together to accomplish a shared goal. Sometimes collaboration gets confused with teamwork. The two are closely related because within a team there is collaboration, however, collaboration also happens outside of a direct team or organization.

Collaboration is a practiced behavior that increases employee engagement, productivity, performance, company culture, learning, stakeholder alignment, and more. Therefore, the value of collaboration far out-weighs what could be accomplished alone; like they say, two heads are better than one.

Working on a team or striving to grow a business involves the interdependency of collaborative effort, and impacts the outcome of a shared goal.  When collaboration is successful — everybody wins!

Consider all the necessary parties it takes to make your work more productive, and start nurturing those relationships; you won’t be disappointed.

“Collaboration allows us to know more than we are capable of knowing by ourselves.”

~Paul Solarz

Communication

The skill of communication is about using words to convey a message, and though it may sound simple, communication can be complicated. Communicating daily does not mean one is good at it. Effective communication takes time and effort to develop.

Think about moving from toddler, preschool, school-aged, adolescent, and so on.  Through each stage greater communication is built.

The transmission of messages is not the only factor to communication, more importantly is how the message is expressed. Even a toddler that barely knows how to speak will soften their voice and say thank you to get what they want. I don’t know why that’s so hard for adults to understand.

In all seriousness, it’s not about manipulation.  Successful communication includes being present, engaged, open, actively listening, and exhibiting empathy.

Communicating this way builds trust and connection, shows others they matter, reduces conflict, boosts job satisfaction, reinforces team cooperation, collaborative relationships, improves efficiency, promotes loyalty, and more.

“Communication, the human connection, is the key to personal and career success.”

~Paul J. Meyer

Fundamental Skills for Success

Developing leadership, collaboration, and communication skills is fundamental to personal and organizational success. These capabilities go a long way and can afford you upward mobility and business advancement.

Do not let these familiar words fool you because they pack a big punch. Highly skilled top talent is exactly what employers are looking for today.

Take time to reflect and plan out your career or business goals, and seek out training and development to upskill and reskill, adding to your credibility.

Lead Global Network specializes in leadership skill development. Check out our online leadership training for upcoming sessions. All training is virtual, affordable, and digital badges/certificates are issued upon completion.

If investing in professional development is not on your to-do-list for 2022, I guess it’s  safe to assume you are comfortable where you are, and that’s okay.

But, for those that want to grow their career or business, and upgrade their skills and abilities, getting comfortable is not an option because it breeds complacency, and that my friend is self-sabotage at its best. It will derail your career or business, and keep you stuck.

To increase your competitive edge and attain a sustainable future, continual growth and development is vital to your success.

Upskilling is a big topic. I’ve been seeing several articles on it and the company I work for has also been talking about it a lot lately. This was the nudge I needed. Thanks!

This was a good read! I think we forget that we need each other to get the job done, so collaboration is very important. Something else I am taking away from this read is to focus on adding personal development training to my goal list for 2023. I’m not sure why I haven’t been doing that, but this blog was a good reminder. I look forward to enrolling in some of the courses you all offer. Thank you!
